My Story — From Zero to HVAC Design Engineer
My name is Harsha. I finished my mechanical engineering degree. Then I did not know what to do next.
I was a fresh graduate. I had no job. I did not know which field to choose. I had never heard of HVAC design before.
Today, I work as an HVAC Design Engineer at Apel in Bangalore.
In this review, I will tell you how this happened. I will share what I learned. I will also tell you what helped me get my job.
If you are a mechanical engineering student or fresh graduate, this review is for you.
“I had no HVAC knowledge. No software skills. No job. Three months of training changed everything.”
My Problem After Graduation
After I finished my degree, I had many questions. I did not know the answers.
Here is what I was struggling with:
Today, I work as an HVAC Design Engineer at Apel in Bangalore.
- I did not know which industry to go into
- I did not know anything about HVAC design
- I did not know how to use design software
- I had no real projects in my portfolio
- No company was calling me for interviews
I started watching YouTube videos about HVAC. I also did some free online courses. But after many weeks, I still had no job. The free videos taught me some basic theory. That was it. No software practice. No real project. No help finding a job.
I needed something better.
Why I Chose a Paid HVAC Course Instead of Free Videos
I watched many YouTube videos. But I realised one thing clearly.
YouTube teaches you what HVAC is. It does not teach you how to design an HVAC system.
Companies do not hire engineers who only know theory. They need engineers who can use software. They need engineers who have done a real project.
So I started looking for a proper HVAC training course. I read different reviews online. I compared a few institutes. Then I chose the ACTMEP HVAC Design and Drafting Program.
What Makes ACTMEP Different from Other HVAC Institutes
Real Live Projects
You must complete a real HVAC project before getting your certificate.
Trainers from Industry
Trainers have real work experience. They know how HVAC design is done on actual projects.
Online + Offline Classes
You attend classes in person. You also get recorded videos to revise at home.
Placement Support
After the course, ACTMEP helps you find a job by connecting you with companies.
Most free courses give you a certificate after a test. That is all. ACTMEP checks your project work. They help you fix mistakes. Then they help you get a job.

What Topics Are Covered in the HVAC Course
The ACTMEP HVAC Design and Drafting Program covers everything you need for a real job. Here are the main topics:
Introduction to HVAC
Refrigerants in HVAC
Air Distribution Design
District Cooling
Toilet Ventilation
Staircase Pressurization
Bill of Quantities (BOQ)
How Air-Conditioning Works
HVAC Load Calculation
VRF Systems
Cold Storage Design
Kitchen Ventilation
Green HVAC
Types of Compressors
Equipment Selection
Hydronic Heating and Cooling
Ventilation Design
Car Parking Ventilation
HVAC Designer Checklist
These are real topics that HVAC engineers work on in actual buildings every day.
Software I Learned in the HVAC Training
Before joining, I did not know any HVAC software. After 3 months, I could use these tools:
HVAC Drawing and Layout
Used to draw duct layouts and HVAC floor plans for buildings.
Load Calculation Software
Used to calculate how much heating or cooling a building needs.
3D HVAC Modeling
Used to build 3D models of HVAC systems inside buildings.
Calculation Sheets
Used for manual load calculations and preparing documents.
These are the exact tools that HVAC companies use every day. When I went for my interview, I already knew how to use them. That helped me a lot.
My Live HVAC Design Project
Every student at ACTMEP must complete one real HVAC design project. This is not a test on paper. It is a real design task — just like the work you do at a company.
My project was the HVAC design for a commercial building.
Here is what I had to do:
- Calculate the heat load for each room using HAP
- Choose the right HVAC equipment based on the calculation
- Design the air distribution system
- Prepare the HVAC layout drawing in AutoCAD
- Prepare the Bill of Quantities document
After I submitted the project, my trainer checked it. There were some mistakes. The trainer told me exactly what was wrong. I fixed them. Then I submitted again.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Most institutes give a certificate after a test. ACTMEP gives the certificate only after your project is checked and approved. This makes your certificate more valuable in job interviews.
How ACTMEP Helped Me Get My First HVAC Job
The total course duration is 3 months. After my project was approved, the ACTMEP placement team stepped in.
They helped me prepare for job applications. They shared my profile with HVAC companies. And they guided me through the process.
I was placed as an HVAC Design Engineer at Apel in Bangalore.
I started knowing nothing about HVAC. Three months later, I had a job offer.
"I had zero knowledge. Three months of real training changed my career completely."

How Much Do HVAC Engineers Earn in India?
Many students ask this question before joining any HVAC course. Here are the typical salaries for HVAC engineers in India:
| Experience | Job Role | Salary Per Year |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh Graduate | Junior HVAC Engineer | ₹2.5 – ₹4 LPA |
| 2 to 4 Years | HVAC Design Engineer | ₹4 – ₹8 LPA |
| 5+ Years | Senior HVAC Engineer | ₹8 – ₹15 LPA |
Engineers who know HVAC software well and have real project experience grow faster in salary.
My Advice to Students Choosing an HVAC Course in Chennai
If you are looking for an HVAC design course in Chennai, here is what I suggest:
- Do not depend only on YouTube. It is good for learning basics. But it will not get you a job on its own.
- Look for a course that includes real projects. Without a live project, you have nothing to show in an interview.
- Make sure they teach industry software. AutoCAD, HAP, and Revit MEP are the tools companies use.
- Check the trainer's experience. A trainer who has worked on real projects teaches you differently.
- Ask about placement support. A good institute should help you connect with companies after the course.
About ACTMEP
ACTMEP is a training institute for MEP and HVAC design. MEP stands for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing. The institute trains fresh graduates and working engineers to become job-ready HVAC and MEP engineers.
The courses are practical. You do not just read theory. You learn software. You work on real design projects. And after the course, the placement team helps you find a job.
New batches start on the 5th and 15th of every month.
My Final Honest Review of the ACTMEP HVAC Program
I joined ACTMEP with zero HVAC knowledge. I was nervous. I did not know if I could do it
But the training was well structured. The trainers explained things clearly. The project work was hard, but it taught me more than any YouTube video could.
The placement support was genuine. They did not just say "we will help you." They actually connected me with companies and followed up.
If you are serious about a career in HVAC — stop watching free videos and take action. A structured program with real projects and placement support is what gets you a job.
“If you are serious about HVAC design, stop searching. Take the course. Do the project. Get the job. That is the only path that works.”
Frequently Asked Questions About HVAC Courses
Yes. HVAC is one of the best fields for mechanical engineers. Every building needs an HVAC system. So the demand for HVAC engineers is always high — in India and abroad.
HVAC engineers use AutoCAD for drawing, HAP for load calculations, Revit MEP for 3D design, and Excel for calculation sheets. These are the tools companies expect you to know.
A good HVAC training program takes 3 to 4 months. This includes classes, software practice, and completing a live project. Shorter programs may not cover everything you need for a job.
YouTube is good for understanding basic HVAC concepts. But it will not give you software skills, real project experience, or placement support. For a job, you need a structured training program.
Yes. ACTMEP runs the HVAC Design and Drafting Program in Chennai. New batches start on the 5th and 15th of every month. The course includes software training, a live project, and placement assistance.
Fresh HVAC engineers in India usually earn between ₹2.5 and ₹4 LPA. With 2 to 4 years of experience, this grows to ₹4 to ₹8 LPA. Senior engineers with strong software skills earn ₹8 to ₹15 LPA.
